On March 12, a woman working at the Monarch Casino in Black Hawk was charged with the theft of half a million dollars from a cash cage.
According to FOX31, who obtained court documents for the incident, an investigator with the Division of Gaming, along with surveillance operators for the casino, said that video shows that Cashier Sabrina Eddy “[took] out stacks of cash on multiple occasions.”
According to the court documents, at 12:44 a.m., Eddy allegedly removed two bricks of cash from the cage, amounting to $100,000, putting them into a box. The same thing happened at 12:46 a.m. and 12:50 a.m. At 12:55 a.m. the video allegedly shows Eddy putting tape on the box, going to her vehicle in the parking lot, and driving away.
She is accused of returning to the casino less than two hours later to take more money out of the cash cage. According to the court documents, the total removed from the cash cage was $500,000.
The investigator for the Division of Gaming was alerted by a surveillance operator at the casino at about 5:45 a.m. According to the surveillance operator, Eddy called to say that she’d taken money off the premises and that she was bringing it back. She said she thought she might be arrested.
The investigator met with Eddy when she returned to the casino. She told the investigator that while she was in the cash cage she received a call and text messages on the casino’s phone from a person identifying as the head of operations, who told her there was “an issue with a UPS order leading to a failed delivery, a breach of their contract with the casino.” The caller allegedly told Eddy to look for an envelope with the contract, which she could not find. Then the caller told her to put the money into a box.
The caller then told her to take the cash to a lawyer at St. Anthony’s Hospital. Allegedly she delivered the cash to that individual at the emergency department and was told to get more. She returned to the casino and took more cash, then returned to the hospital and gave the box to the same man. According to Eddy, she was told to wait for the box, but the man never returned. She tried to call him back, but got no response. Then Eddy called the casino to tell them she was coming back.
At that point Eddy was arrested and charged with theft, and was booked into Gilpin County Jail, where she remains.
“The Division of Gaming is currently conducting active administrative and criminal investigations into a recent theft at the Monarch Casino, and the Division of Gaming is unable to make any statements or provide any records related to its investigation during the active investigation process,” according to a statement from the Division of Gaming to FOX31.
