Guitar player Tom Knowlton, mandolin player Sam Parks, upright bass player Taylor Shuck, and fiddle player Dan Andree played at the Gold Hill Inn on May 19, 2023. The group has been together since last year. Initially, the band was a duo, then two different trios before finally settling on the configuration of four that currently makes up The Fretliners. They didn’t name themselves The Fretliners originally, giving themselves a placeholder name, but after playing that first gig, the band members realized they wanted to make the band part of their fulltime gig and give it a proper name.
The band, along with help from Knowlton’s dad Jeff, have been writing original songs together under the moniker since then. They feel their greatest strength as a band is being a vocal-forward bluegrass band, as their harmonies and lead vocals are featured prominently on most, if not all, of their original material. While they don’t consider themselves a jam band, they love improvising during live shows, changing things up every time they perform.
The band hopes that the songs connect with people and that ultimately, their shows are a memorable experience for their audience. They love the positive experience they get from performing together, which, in turn, makes the audience excited for the performances, which allows the band to channel that excitement into more energized performances and create a positive feedback loop.
They are currently working with legendary producer Sally Van Meter to create their debut original album, for which they have created a GoFundMe page. The band says that every time a new song was brought to the table for the album, it was exciting to see how the band as a whole, along with Van Meter’s production ideas, would transform the songs into something special. They hope that their audience will support their GoFundMe and appreciate the songs that the album has to offer.
