Business Short Takes: Jimmy Keith Real Estate

Jimmy Keith has lived in Nederland since 1974. He knows the real estate market of Boulder County like the back of his hand, and he has utilized that knowledge as an agent for RE/ MAX of Boulder and as the owner of his own real estate business, Jimmy Keith Real Estate.

Keith helped set up The Train Cars in their current location with his wife Char shortly after moving to Nederland. After doing so, he became interested in buying gold and silver mines in the Caribou and Eldora valleys. He started buying mines and mineral patents and realized there was a market in these mines when people became interested in building their cabins near them.

Real estate became a full-time job for Keith in 1984, and during that time, he sold a lot of alternative living such as geodesic domes and earth berm houses. As prices have gone up over the decades, Keith’s reputation as the mountain man helped his success to continue through that time, and with over 35 years of experience, he is well-versed in the background of all of his properties.

Working with his sister-in-law Kirsten, he currently sells horse properties, mining claims, residential and seasonal homes, and commercial buildings. He claims his company grows about 10% every year, and his business background (having attended the CU Boulder School of Business) and Kirsten’s background in television and information management has surely helped with that growth. Keith and his family lived on Magnolia Road for 38 years, and his three sons all went to school in Nederland.

Selling properties has still gone strong during COVID, as Keith explains that “many people wanted to move from crowded cities to a more rural area” in order to feel more protected. He says that “closing difficult properties successfully and working a national market” has helped grow his company to where it is today.

Keith’s favorite aspect of his job is the people involved in it. He says that real estate is a good business to be a part of if you’re a people person. He loves being able to make a mutually beneficial transaction with his tenants – the realtor gets paid and the buyers are happy because they get a property that they are thrilled with. As Keith puts it, they are happy to get a piece of the rock.
