Fixing up Guercio Field: McCollums’s Excavating applies mulch and seed mixture to Guercio Field. PHOTO BY TANYA UNGER[/caption]
The morning of Thursday, May 18, brought heavy rain and hail followed by the highly anticipated seeding of Guercio Field. Nicki Dunn of Nederland Parks Department was there to provide information and oversight. The field had been tilled and amended with nitrogen and naturally occurring nutrients to support new vegetation growth. Noxious weeds and dirt inundated the field because of its high salt and iron content.
Guercio Field has been replanted with a mix of drought resistant grass and native wildflowers. After tilling, fertilizing, and seeding a saw dust mulch was applied to help retain water while the new plants take root. The new field will not need much watering or mowing as it is an ideal plant mixture for our climate.
Town staff asks that this $16,000 investment be respected and people stay off the grass until some hardy blades can be seen. This could take a few months. For now, sit back, relax, and watch the grass grow.
