In the spring of 2023, Rachael Scala and Tien Truong embarked on an entrepreneurial journey inspired by a shared love for ecological landscape design. Their story began at the 2022 Boulder Permaculture Design course, where Scala and Truong were inspired to join forces and redefine landscaping with their business Terra Havens.
Scala, a seasoned guest instructor at the course, with a background in natural products and fine-up-cycled art, found common ground with Truong whose roots were in real estate and sales. This venture has been successful and fulfilling for both Scala and Truong; their favorite part of it is being outdoors every day, immersed in the natural world, and tending to soil, bees, plants, and the people who entrust them with their land.
Both brought valuable experience from operating Scala’s own landscape maintenance company since 2020, blending sales expertise and passion towards environmental well-being. Since then, they have been committed to creating landscapes that are not only beautiful but that also benefit the environment.
Terra Havens offers permaculture design and installation, as well as maintenance services while being dedicated to the art of crafting regenerative landscapes and transforming spaces into sustainable havens. Their unique permaculture design methodology includes conceptual and digital ecological landscape design, landscape installation, landscape maintenance, and landscape consulting.
What sets Terra Haven apart is their philosophy of harmonizing reciprocity between landowners and nature. “We are inspired to create lush, ecologically designed landscapes that yield a host of benefits, including native and xeric landscape systems, habitat for pollinators and birds, homegrown food, beauty, and perennial vitality,” Scala shares.
They view landscaping as an art that mimics nature’s processes and aligns with clients’ dreams of beauty, longevity, and sustainability. Education is also at the core of Terra Haven’s design process, sharing best practices for each agricultural zone and providing maintenance tips to empower clients.
Scala and Truong have been committed to making Terra Havens not only a business but a movement towards sustainable and harmonious living. As they invite clients to share their aspirations for landscaping, they are equally excited about optimizing the local foodshed’s cultivation capacity through market gardens for Peak to Peak businesses.
As Terra Havens enters its second year of operation, the company witnesses an impressive 200% growth to kick off the 2024 season. Currently, Terra Haven serves Boulder County for design, building, and consultations. The dream, according to Scala, extends beyond local boundaries. Terra Havens envisions scaling to a national and international level, applying their expertise not only to private spaces but also to public-benefitting projects like parks, schools, highway strips, broad-scale agriculture, and reforestation.
