Trust can be sensitive, and the level of trust one gives is a matter of who you ask. Some people believe it’s easier to trust others than to trust oneself. But who does one trust with one’s delicate emotions, ideas, and thoughts?
Meet Martina Pernicano. Her ceramic studio was founded and opened in 2019. Between 2012 and 2016, she studied making functional ceramics under master potters such as Robin Hopper, Phil Rogers, and Bill van Gilder. She completed a three-month long apprenticeship with Bill van Gilder in 2017.
Pernicano creates pottery “designed for everyday use in the kitchen, including espresso cups, latte/ cappuccino cups, coffee/tea mugs, breakfast bowls, plates, platters, and vases.”
“My studio is a high-volume production of pottery. All pieces are made by hand, glazed, and fired in my studio. I thrive to make all pieces as identical as possible and provide consistency in appearance yet leave room for a footprint of the handmade process, my heart and soul in each piece,” shares Pernicano.
She finds inspiration in nature and loves to use exposed clay surfaces, natural colors, and patterns created by heat during the firing process. “I want my customers to stay connected with the earth and appreciate the feel of clay, natural colors, and handmade work.”
Whether you’re heating a kiln, shaping clay, or trimming a piece, an artist must always trust themself to make the right choice. They must also trust that, at the very least, the recipient recognizes their hard work, making trust, in general, a large part of artistic creation.
Martina Pernicano’s home studio is located in Coal Creek Canyon. You can find her on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/spinware.studio/ or you can give her a call at 303-668-6997.
