sometimes
in the longest days
I feel like I’m the only
thing
left living
that the crows are just
shadows
in the sky
and then I realize
this sort of thinking
has led us to now
where we drive roads
beneath which
is the forgotten earth
and I come to understand
the inverse is often true
that everything else is alive
but us
that our world of waste
and concrete
is the dead thing
spilled over soil
once blooming
with orange petals
neon in a perfect sunset
now just a parking lot
with the horizon blocked
by some new luxury high-rise
