Some words for the week
another dead fox

Some words for the week
another dead fox
at the edge of my road
highway hit
broken legged
wide eyed and matted
I hope it’ll be gone
by the time I come home
but here it is
at the end of the day
a wet fur reminder
of so many things
death and humanity
separation and snow
I park the truck in my driveway
get my shovel
pick up the body
walk with it down the road
there are no cars
no one else around
I say “I’m sorry”
and some other empty prayers
and toss it down the ravine
it’s out of sight now
and away from
the mud spray of passing cars
but it’s still dead
and I’ll miss seeing it’s orange
out of the corner of my eye
when I’m in the kitchen
cooking dinner alone
