Peak Perspectives: What is Pride?

Posted

Last week, I asked you, “What DOES Pride month mean to you?”

I want to say thank you for all of the kind and thoughtful responses. I am including some of them here.

“Pride to me means my son gets to spend the rest of his life married to a man who will care deeply for him. Pride means sometimes I have to remember a pronoun or name for someone I’m not quite familiar with but it means everything to them. Live and let love, indeed.” ~ Rebecca Linn

“A celebration of life on Earth.” ~ Jeannie Canape

“Love who you love.” ~ Michelle Adams

“It should mean that you are proud of who you are, while you still have respect for those who do not share your exact views.” ~ Tami Archer

“Fabulousness! Susan Green and I experienced it in Puerto Vallarta and it was pretty darned fun!” ~ Jeffrey Green

“Pride, to me, is the opportunity to reflect on and celebrate all the joy, wisdom, empathy, love, ferocity, talent, and humor the LGBTQ community brings to the table. It’s a time to gather with my LGBTQ friends, family, neighbors, and extended community to party our collective asses off!” ~ Tony Zotti

“Pride month to me is about supporting others to be their authentic self so they know they are always aafe with me.” ~ Leza Morosini Spencer

“A celebration of who people are without trying to fit them into the box of who other people think they should be.” ~ Anne Howarth

“Freedom to be who you are and love who you are. Freedom to love other people for who they are. Freedom to love who you want to love. Freedom to be loved. Freedom to be happy.” ~ Laura Cartwright

“From Lily: a joyful month celebrating all people.” ~ Heather Carmichael

Out Boulder Rainbows over Boulder County initiative has businesses flying the LGBTQ+ BIPOC flags. We brought the flags to NED businesses as an effort for Rainbows over Ned. Hoping to see those flying soon! If there is a business that didn’t receive one we still have some at Wild Bear. We will be with a booth at Boulder Pride Festival and will be hosting a Pride Hike on June 17. https://www.outboulder.org/pride

“Recognition of existence, struggle, power, joy, and truth. LGBTQ+ people still lose lives for simply being queer and being here. They still experience other challenges like losing family by being honest about themselves or losing jobs due to sexual orientation discrimination. We have come so far, and have so far still to go. Isn’t it a much more vibrant and fun world because we exist.” ~ Cynthia Bakke

“In the best of worlds we simply would not need recognition of any “type” of group. Can we live and have human being months. I don’t really have any patience for labels on people. So much judgement, hate, persecution, and just being intolerant is the norm. As a college professor I have had students of every race and personal identification. Their spirit is what has always been important in our relationship.” ~ Charles Smith

“Acceptance of people living true selves and loving who one loves.” ~ Sandy Hollingsworth

“An acknowledgement of an ongoing political struggle for LGBT liberation, entwined by necessity with the struggle for economic and social equity for the entire working class.” ~ Lee Foster
