Peak Perspectives: Turkeys, timelines and temperatures

Posted

Wow, what an incredible week it’s been, and it’s only Wednesday. The first thing I have to do today (after I hit send on the paper) is pick up my turkeys to make for the Nederland Community Thanksgiving Dinner (see page 29 for details).

This week we have been working hard on a bit of a design change in the paper. You’ve seen a lot of that change, if you’ve made it this far through the publication. What do you think? I like some of it. Dislike some of it. I will keep working on balancing all of it and definitely want to hear from you about it. Thoughtful comments appreciated. Email me anytime at info@themountainear.com.

Over the past year we have been working to hire the staff needed to run this ever-growing and changing publication. But even more than that, to staff both offices with regular office hours, document and implement policies and procedures, complete our Employee Handbook, improve our benefit options, complete our first staff evaluation forms, and more! And, we are proud to say, we’re there. On all of it. Timeline = complete.

About a month ago, we leased a large-scale printer/copier. The copier is available to service the needs of our community. It prints black and white or color copies. It can print brochures (folded or multiple pages with staples). It is available for your needs Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at The Mountain-Ear office in Nederland at 98 W. 1st Street (we’re available later by appointment). We have also hired a part-time designer to build your ads, brochures, flyers, and posters and to take care of all of your design needs. We have an Ad Sales and Marketing Coordinator to take care of all of your planning and creating, and to help with the execution of your marketing plan. We have social media specialists on staff. This is the side of the company we have been working to build over the last several months. We can be your “one-stop shop” for everything you need to promote your business or event.

Not to sway the conversation too far off topic, but this morning I woke up to that chilly reminder that winter is just around the corner. The snow on the patio has been falling in tiny flakes since 5 a.m. and though it’s not adding up much yet, the possibility is certainly there. I’m thankful my car has good tires on it. I won’t need new ones for winter. And Doug’s car had tires swapped this week, so it’s ready to go. I feel prepared.

This weekend I plan to attend the drive-thru food drive for the Gilpin food pantry. I am picking up a few things to donate and hope a lot of friends do the same. Here is the info about the food drive: “Bring your donations to the Food Pantry, 101 Norton Drive, on Saturday, November 11 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. A friendly volunteer will unload your car and you will be on your way with a smile on your face, knowing you have helped everybody have a terrific holiday. Wish list: Turkey breasts, roasting chickens, olives, pickles, crispy onions, dinner rolls, salad dressing, muffin mix, pancake mix, cranberries, mushroom soup, corn, and green beans. Fresh potatoes and yams can be delivered during the food drive. To donate fresh produce, drop off at the pantry on Saturday, November 18 between 1:30 and 3 p.m. Questions? Call 303-912-7492.”
