A not quite as short one, since I started it Monday. Most of you know, this is about the last thing I do each week. I think about something that is on my mind and I share it with you, our readers. Sometimes it’s really newspaper focused. Sometimes it is more family focused. And, once in a while, it’s a bit political.
This week you will AGAIN see a LOT of news in the paper. We covered a high school graduation, a preschool graduation, eighth grade continuation, fifth grade sendoff, end of year music and art, and more. This has me thinking about the balance of our reporting. Some folks really LOVE the school coverage. Others don’t. Once in a while, I hear a few grumbles about too much of that kid stuff. Then when summer comes, I hear grumbles about not enough kid stuff. So, a quick reminder, summer is here. There will be one more week of regular school stuff (this is Gilpin’s last week). Then there will be a bit of a break. But, we’ll still be covering all the cool stuff around the region that’s kid related. Simply not school related for a bit.
We also covered our normal government news, meetings, had several columns (I LOVE Mark Cohen’s Diversion’s Column because I laugh SO hard), a bunch of letters, and we tried hard not to cut anything time sensitive. We held a total of three stories and a couple letters. You’ll see them next week in a regular 32 page paper (with our advertising percentages we will likely be between 32 and 40 pages all year).
One thing you won’t see much of, YET, are some of the stories we are working on for Pride month. According to the Anti Defamation League, “Commemorated each year in the month of June, LGBTQ+ Pride Month honors the 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York City. In June of 1969, patrons and supporters of the Stonewall Inn staged an uprising to resist the police harassment and persecution to which LGBTQ+ Americans were commonly subjected. This uprising marked the beginning of a movement to outlaw discriminatory laws and practices against LGBTQ+ Americans. Today, LGBTQ+ Pride Month celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts, attracting millions of participants around the world.” During June you will see some stories about what Pride month means to local residents and businesses.
Above all else, I am a firm believer of “live and let live.” To me, it’s that easy. Love IS love. I LOVE all my friends and family, unconditionally.
So here, I ask you to be nice friends, please. I’m gonna ask an honest question and look for your thoughtful answers. We are running some stories in June for Pride month. While we have a few stories in the works, I would like to hear from you as well. I’m going to gather positive comments to include in my own column in the next few weeks. So here goes.. What DOES Pride month mean to you? Email me your answer.
Oh, and while I’m on my soapbox (it’s not real tall and it’s cardboard so it’s kinda bent to the side and doesn’t actually hold me up), please FILL out the housing needs survey and assessment for the Town of Nederland. It’s here: https:// bhi.mysocialpinpoint.com/nederlandhousing-needs-assessment and it’s so important for the town to gather information about what your needs are.
