Peak Perspectives: Four-legged family

Posted

Over the past two weeks we have had an adventure of sorts. My eldest daughter rescued some kittens. Well, three kittens to start. Then she went back to rescue the mom, so mom could teach the kittens to hunt. The day she showed up for the second rescue, mama cat had given birth to another seven. So a three-cat rescue quickly turned to 11. Just like that.

My daughter kept mama and the youngest babies in one of her barns. She put the other (older) kittens in the other barn. That’s how it all started, anyway.

We determined the elder kittens were probably closer to six months or so. And the younger ones were born on October 6. So on December 1, she loaded up a bunch of them and delivered them down to my youngest son, who met her in Broomfield. By that time, we had all five that arrived promised good homes. A few things changed at the last minute and the sudden extra kittens found homes with friends of ours.

It’s been…an adventure. We have one that is waiting for his new family to get back from vacation. And tonight, Reggie is back for a two night sleepover with his other brothers. We are keeping one. We have named him Milo. They all had their first vaccinations last week. (Thanks, Dr. Clements!) Two more rounds and they’ll all get spayed/neutered around February (which happens to be Spay And Neuter Awareness Month). Talk about timing.

In the meantime, we’re taking our sweet girl in tomorrow for surgery. Maui the dog has developed a new lump. It’s growing fast and we want to get ahead of it. She’s had a few procedures in the last year and we worry about our old gal. She’s just over 12 and other than being a bit lumpy, seems healthy as can be. Tomorrow night I will bring her home and she can cuddle by the fire while I listen to an online meeting.

Other than that, I’ve spent a lot of time at holiday markets over the last few weeks. I have purchased my gifts from neighbors and friends. Tomorrow I will ship the last ones out to my family and hope it all makes it on time. Then I’ll start planning what cookies to make for the cookie contest at the Presbyterian Church (Sunday 10-11:30 a.m.) and the cookie exchange at Very Nice Brewing Company (Sunday at 4 p.m.).

And then, I’ll look forward to a bit of family time on Christmas Eve and Christmas day. Oh, and the potluck at Very Nice Brewing on Christmas day.
