NEDERLAND - Nederland Elementary School’s Winter Holiday Sing Along on December 19 was about celebrating the season and connecting as a community.
The fifth graders led the concert and got us all in the Holiday spirit. Band and orchestra teacher Christine Mallery had the fifth grade band and orchestra play two songs each. Mallery and the fifth graders deserve praise for all their efforts, as it is not easy learning to play an instrument, and it is not easy teaching fifth graders to learn to play an instrument.
The orchestra played “Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel” and “Jingle Bells.” The band played “Kwanzaa Celebration” and “Wenceslas Variations.” Excellent work, fifth graders!
Music teacher Kirk Kubicek took his seemingly endless energy and created a beautiful vocal concert. With the Kindergarteners on stage, all the students sang the school song “We are the Panthers.” Then Kindergarteners performed a flashy, high-paced scarf dance to “Wizards of Winter.”
The first grade class spread some good vibes by singing “Everything’s Gonna be All Right.” Second grade students shared their gratitude with the song “Thanks a Lot,” by Raffi. The third graders sang “Winter Walk.”
The fourth and fifth graders then filled the risers on the stage. They sang two songs, “Here Comes the Snow” and “Candy Cane Lane.” “Here Comes the Snow” is an upbeat pop tune that kids brought to life with great vocals and hand movements.
“Candy Cane Lane” was a musically challenging piece, where seven fifth graders (Araya, Michael, Rachel, Maizie, Oren, Lucy, and Finley) came to the front of the stage and sang a different verse of the song in counterpoint to the rest of the choir.
They all sounded amazing. Their musical talent and dedication to learning challenging pieces is impressive.
It was time for everyone to join in the singing! The audience and all the students together sang “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Winter Wonderland,” “Frosty the Snowman,” and “Jingle Bells.”
We all could feel the excitement of the Holidays in the voices of the students and families as the NES community joined together in song.
