Ice rescue is a high risk operation that requires precision teamwork, quick action, and good communication. The yellow Mustang survival suits worn are “dry” suits that allow rescuers to avoid hyperthermia and operate in cold water for longer periods.

We use a specialized rope system to connect to the patient and have a crew on shore to haul the patient and the rescuer to a more solid surface, so care can be initiated.

Besides practicing these skills, our annual training should remind the community to stay off the ice, as it can be extremely unstable and even deadly.

Fire departments in the area and around the world hold training sessions like these that are pertinent to their geography and their communities to gain knowledge and stay strong in their skill set.
