Once guitarist and vocalist Chuck Sitero founded High Lonesome, his goal was to find the right group of players to create the right sound. They eventually landed on himself, bassist Liz Patton, mandolinist and vocalist Josh Bergmann, and dobro player Dylan Kober. According to Sitero, the band started in 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia, and eventually, Sitero moved to Colorado during COVID. He is very happy about this current line-up, as they have played “a lot of really good shows” and are currently working on a record together.
Sitero and Kober mention they like a lot of the same musicians, such as The Grateful Dead, Phish, and Frank Zappa. They also particularly like jazz, and from a bluegrass standpoint, they connected over the East Coast drivegrass sound, with bands such as Blue Highway and the Bluegrass Album Band being cited.
Sitero has been playing guitar since he was six years old, probably from liking the sound of his father’s guitar. He’s been playing professionally since he was 18, although he did take a small break promoting shows in Georgia before founding High Lonesome in 2019. Kober started playing guitar when he was eight, going to school for jazz guitar performance and focusing primarily on electric and jazz guitar. He started playing dobro in a bluegrass ensemble approximately five years ago, and he started diving into the traditions of the instrument and its players.
While they can play traditional-sounding bluegrass, they play a lot of songs that don’t particularly conform themselves to any particular genre. When they play duo and trio shows, they’ll play country and popular-style songs, branching out a bit more from the traditional sound that their band creates. They play a mix of covers and originals with more originals being added constantly.
The band loves being able to connect with each other onstage and providing a venue for the audience to enjoy themselves. They hope that audience members will appreciate the unique sound that the band has to offer for the area and take away the honesty and authenticity that they bring.
You can see the High Lonesome Trio (consisting of Sitero, Kober, and Patton) at Howlin Wind Brewing, 51 A Main Street in Rollinsville, on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 4 p.m.
