Tober Schorr has been studying West African Mande music since 1999. He started playing drum sets when he was about 16, and later, he would try the djembe. He served in the Peace Corps in Mozambique before moving to Boulder a little over 20 years ago. One of the reasons he moved there was because of the African drum and dance scene that was so prevalent there.
Once he moved there, he started studying under African drummers Abdoul Doumbia and Fara Tolno, and he eventually decided to become a professional musician in his early 30s. He graduated from Metro State in 2013 with a second bachelor’s, studying jazz there under Ron Miles and Paul Romaine, and he got the idea of mixing African music with American jazz concepts. In 2017, he started writing music more seriously after getting a pro deal on the music software Finale. In 2018, he joined a funk band as a keyboardist, which gave him more motivation to write the songs he was most passionate about.
In 2020, just as Schorr was about to launch his new band dedicated to this fusion of African and American music, the pandemic hit. He spent the pandemic diving deeper into his art, putting original songs on YouTube, and once the pandemic started settling down in late 2021, he started looking for a lineup for the band. His first lineup performed in December of 2022 at Knotted Root Brewing. Ultimately, he would form a second lineup of the band in the summer of 2023. That lineup consists of Schorr on drums, Will Pavilonis on bass, Duncan Cameron on guitar, Mike Petersen on keys, Jonah Sutinen on saxophone, Ivy Hartfield on vocals, and John Drace on percussion.
In the end, Schorr hopes that the audience feels inspired to feel the groove of the music, and he also hopes that the arrangements that he has created allow the musicians to express themselves and have their moment to shine. He feels that Nederland is a community that truly supports musicians and that this is the perfect environment to premiere a new, unique band.
