Music of the Mountains: Summers Baker

Posted

In high school, Summers Baker saw the band Punch Brothers performing live and fell in love with music. Specifically, he fell in love with acoustic, folk, songwriting, arranging, and the community that surrounded music, particularly bluegrass. From there, he set out to connect with the folk and bluegrass scene in Colorado, writing his own songs and learning traditional American standards along the way.

Through that pursuit, Baker collaborated with many musicians in the scene, including Grace Clark and Clare Elich, who have been collaborating with him for the last eight years. Together, they often perform folk songs with strong harmonies, either original songs of Baker’s that celebrate the mountains of Colorado or covers of songs the three have fallen in love with over the years. He’s also collaborated with mandolin player Jack Dunlevie, fiddle player Ian Parker, bass player Wilson Luallen, and (since 2018) banjo player Sam Armstrong-Zickefoose as a part of the band Meadow Mountain, who released their debut album in 2018.

Baker says that what keeps him coming back to music as his primary artistic outlet is the sense of community and collaboration that is present in the Colorado music scene. He loves being able to share songs with his friends, work on arrangements and harmonies with them, and perform the final products live for an audience, whether they’re covers or originals.

He hopes that the people who come and watch his shows, particularly his upcoming one, walk away “with a renewed appreciation of life in Colorado, whether that be the mountains or time in the wilderness.” That appreciation of life in the mountains, as well as the bond that he has shared with multiple musicians over the years, is why even after all this time, he still comes back to music.

You can see Baker, Clark, and Elich perform together at the Gold Hill Inn, 401 Main Street in Gold Hill, on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at 7 p.m.
