Music of the Mountains: Something Slight

One by one, these four joined forces to become a full band!

NEDERLAND - Alex Randall and Theo Snead have been close friends since college. They’ve always played music together, but they initially didn’t perform as a band.

That all changed when Randall decided to sell his Fender Deluxe amp after he settled in Boulder. The first person to pick it up was Casey Romeo, and the two started to jam together.

Snead moved from living alone in Austin, Texas, to living with Randall in Boulder, and the two of them started jamming with Romeo. At one point, Romeo invited Snead and Randall to perform with him and his band, Elijah Petty and The Part-Times.

Preparing for the show, Snead and Randall discussed asking their friend Livingston Brown to jump in and perform with them. They later realized that his involvement in the show was already guaranteed—Brown was also a member of Elijah Petty and The Part-Times.

Through this connection, Snead, Randall, Romeo, and Brown formed a band. Snead and Randall provide vocals and acoustic guitar, Randall additionally delivers electric guitar and mandolin, Romeo offers pedal steel, and Brown contributes bass.

One day Snead randomly suggested Something Slight as a name idea before their first performance, and everyone loved it. They considered naming the band something like “Something Slight and the TCA” (for Theo, Casey, and Alex), but decided to keep the name simple.

Snead and Randall split songwriting responsibilities for the group, with the band embracing folk, Americana, country, rock, and blues influences. Snead and Randall bring in songs they write individually, and the band as a whole elevates the arrangements into full songs.

Snead hopes to include more songs written from scratch by the whole band in the near future.

Snead and Randall write many of their songs from personal places, and they’ve loved being able to share those stories with an audience and perform them with the entire group. They feel sharing those stories through song takes the weight off carrying those stories inside them.

The band loves seeing people relate personally with their material, and they hope that through the universal topics in their songs, from the lighter to the heavier, audiences connect with that material.

Something Slight will headline with Canyon Collective at the Ned General Store, located at 112 East Second Street in Nederland, for the Equinox Party celebration on Saturday, September 20, 2025, starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 pre-sale and $15 at the door.
