Reeder John Goldman cites two significant influences in his love of music: his mom and The Grateful Dead. Born in Chicago, he grew up with his mother playing the fiddle and the piano around the house, and both of his parents would take him to Grateful Dead shows. He fell in love with the vibe those shows created, and he would eventually go on to grab a saxophone for the first time around his eighth-grade year. The music structure in his school did not appeal to him, so he grabbed an acoustic guitar and jammed with people in the parking lot whenever he could.
Later on, Goldman would join his school’s jazz band (playing guitar, of course), which he enjoyed, and he would play with various kids who dabbled in different styles of music, including bluegrass and heavy rock. He cites other musicians like Bob Dylan, Steve Earle, and Bill Monroe, as well as local bands like Yonder Mountain String Band and Leftover Salmon as additional influences.
He loves improvisation and the conversations that come with music. He’s been writing and co-writing for about six years, but he says he doesn’t have enough material yet to build a full live show, so he performs half originals and half covers. He has also been performing with a band called Clifton Hanger for the last five years, a band described on Facebook as a “psychedelic rock band brewed in Colorado.”
Goldman says his process starts with jamming on the guitar and seeing what chord progressions and lines particularly inspire him. He loves being able to get in the studio and record his own material, but to him, nothing quite beats the connection one gets from performing in a live audience. He hopes that people are able to take away the passion he pours into every song, even if they don’t particularly like the style of it. He loves the spontaneity of his live shows, much like he loves the spontaneity of his music.
To see Reeder Goldman performing solo, be sure to check him out at Very Nice Brewing Company, 20 East Lakeview Drive #112 in Nederland, on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at 5 p.m.
