Josy Rosales started playing guitar at eight years old. He grew up in Venezuela and moved to the United States for college. He graduated from the Berklee College of Music in Boston with a degree in songwriting, having started a rock band during his time at the college. By the time Rosales moved to Colorado last year, he had gotten into the bluegrass scene and his former band had disbanded. Ultimately, he would create a band that is more of a conglomeration of fellow musicians from Colorado, giving him an excuse to play with friends. Some of these friends include Elijah Donovan on banjo, Matt Thomas on bass, Alex Tocco on fiddle, and Brett Kretzer on mandolin.
Rosales finds himself attracted to playing roots music, the kind of music that has a deep history, such as bluegrass, reggae, and jam band music. He finds the most authenticity in these styles of music. Regarding his influences, he says that Jerry Garcia of Grateful Dead fame has influenced him the most, inspiring him to play banjo and allowing him to gravitate towards the styles of music he likes the most.
Rosales loves the connection he gets from the audience whenever he plays live, and he hopes that audience members will be able to have a good time at his shows. Despite having a degree in songwriting, he finds the actual writing process difficult and prefers having finished products to be able to share with his audience. He loves the moments when his process works, however, and he hopes that his audience will be able to connect with the music in the same way he does.
Rosales loves the bluegrass scene in the state of Colorado and appreciates how welcoming it is as a whole. He hopes that whatever audiences decide to do at his shows, whether it’s dancing to the music or getting absorbed in the emotional slow tunes, they come away with a meaningful experience that they will remember for a long time.
