NEDERLAND - Alex Mackenzie-Low first put a band together in 2013, near the end of his time studying music business and recording arts at CU Denver. He put the band together in order to create an album of original songs, and the group grew from there.
The group was originally named A-Mac DZ, a nickname Alex received in high school. Ultimately, the band rebranded to A-Mac and The Height, a name more representative of the collaboration of the group and the “elevating, empowering, positive music” they perform.
Alex has been writing songs since around the age of six, and has performed in at least ten bands throughout his life. He’s performed many different styles of music, from hardcore metal to hip-hop to emo, ultimately landing in reggae rock with A-Mac and The Height.
He started a music festival in Denver called Spread The Word, which went on for seven years in the city. He also currently finds talent for the Frozen Dead Guy Days and books artists for Moe’s Barbecue in Estes Park, and he runs sound as an audio engineer for various venues and festivals.
Alex loves diving into whatever music he can, influenced by jam bands such as The Grateful Dead and hip-hop groups such as A Tribe Called Quest. His favorite band, the reggae group WookieFoot, has influenced much of his songwriting, and he’s recently dived into country with Tyler Childers.
The band as a whole embraces improvisations. They rehearse basic jam structures and find improvisations during shows.
Alex loves seeing the positive impact that his music has on people and the smiles he sees on his audience’s faces from his songs. While he performs solo looping shows, he loves the musical dynamic he’s built with The Height.
Alex hopes that through his group’s shows, audiences can learn how sprawling reggae-rock is, and how many ways the style can be approached. The positive connections he makes through the music are the most important aspects of performing for him, and he has no plans to lose momentum in writing and performing.
