Keep it Local: Amy Hager, diet and nutrition

Posted

You might know Amy Hager from her Colorado Mountain Living business, but what you did not know is that she’s the sole proprietor of most of her businesses, including Amy Hager, RDN, which began in 2013 when Hager was eager to escape the organized healthcare industry.

She was eager to learn the ins and outs of starting a practice as a dietician. Hager runs an insurance-based telehealth nutrition practice, assisting clients working on improving health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.

As a registered dietitian, she works with insurance companies to counsel clients on nutrition. For those that weren’t aware, it’s common for many plans to provide 100% coverage for medical nutrition therapy, even for multiple, ongoing appointments.

As far as Hager knows, there is not another registered dietician in the Peak to Peak region in-network with multiple insurance plans. She offers telehealth (video visits) as the primary avenue for consults. A great benefit, as often in this area, access to healthcare can be impacted by geographic location and weather conditions.

Though Hager is the only employee, she covers more than just Colorado. She’s self-taught in business, has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nutrition, and is a certified Health Coach and Diabetes Educator. Who better to offer nutritional advice?

Unlike a lot of businesses, Covid jump-started Hager’s business. Taking a three year break from private practice when she and her husband moved to Colorado five years ago, she was uncertain about a local business in a rural setting.

Hager confesses, “I was doing virtual work as a dietitian during the pandemic, then heard other dietitians discussing how insurance was covering telehealth. I quit my job (yes, during the pandemic) and took steps to re-open my nutrition practice, this time in Colorado. Last year, I was maxed out with virtual client visits from Colorado, Arizona, and Virginia.”

With more activity in the first two quarters of the year, Hager predicts her telehealth business to be seasonal. Running a personal business, however, offers Hager the opportunity to be flexible. It’s what she loves about it.

When asked what her favorite part about what she does is, she delightedly responds, “I love guiding clients through behavior change and seeing how empowered they become to achieve goals they set. It’s great to hear about their wins and achievements.”
