The weather lately has been a reminder of the unpredictability of life. One moment I’m shoveling a foot of snowflakes. Another moment I’m outside watching the 40+ degree temperatures quickly melt the snow. Then, I’m praying the wind doesn’t blow the entire forest on top of my truck.
I turn my thoughts to warmer memories and find myself staring at the twinkle lights strategically placed around Central City. I pretend I can fly and I imagine what mountain towns look like from above this time of year. They remind me of those holiday villages’ decorations.
Randomly, I begin to wonder which of the locals we’ve covered this season have you supported. If you’re a last-minute shopper or just want to show your love for local businesses, here are a few more places you can add to your list.
Dory’s Dozens Market is a great place to find local eggs and jams. It’s also a grocery store, making it easy for you to run personal and holiday errands. If you enjoy discovering new kitchen ingredients, Dory’s has several products like banana butter, sweet and spicy bourbon mustard, and Kentucky bar fight jam.

A lovely gallery featuring local artisans is the Gilpin County Arts Association. Nestled in one of Central City’s oldest buildings, Washington Hall, the Gilpin Arts displays various art from locals and beyond, revealing the town’s history, artistic community, and expressions that are unique and add to Central City’s appeal.

The weather reminds me that nothing is constant. It also reminds me that there are very few things we can control, leading me to focus on hope. My hope for today, the new year, and forever is that the holiday spirit continues beyond the holiday season.
