Eliminate Ned light pollution?

Posted

Dear Editor,

I am writing to bring attention to an issue that affects many of us in our mountain community: light pollution. Specifically, the parking lot lights at Tebo shopping center, the post office, and the yard light at Ace Hardware are causing excessive light pollution in the area, and I believe this is a problem that needs to be addressed.

Light pollution is a growing concern because it can have negative impacts on human health and the environment. It can disrupt our natural sleep patterns, making it harder for us to get a good night’s rest. It can also interfere with the behavior of nocturnal animals and impact the natural ecosystem.

The Tebo parking lot lights are particularly problematic because they are excessively bright, un-shaded (as required by Town code), and remain on all night. They are shining into people’s homes and bedrooms, disrupting their sleep and causing a nuisance, as well as obscuring our beautiful night sky.

I urge Tebo, Ace Hardware, and the Town Board to work together to address this issue. A simple solution could be to install lower-powered lights that are shaded and only project down, at what they are meant to illuminate. This would not only help to reduce light pollution, but it would also save energy and reduce costs.

I hope that by bringing this issue to your attention, we can work together to find a solution and make our community a better place to live.

Sincerely,

David Hardy
