NEDERLAND - With winter comes a craving for that confectionery favorite, a hankering for homemade nourishment, a pining for pie. Luckily, the Nederland Community Library, in collaboration with the Nederland Food Pantry, brought back the community favorite Pie Contest for its fourth year, to deliver more than 24 variations of baked deliciousness to the sweet teeth of residents and visitors.
On Sunday, November 10, 2024, competitors dropped off their entries at the library and prepared for the people of Nederland to line up to get their plates and voter slips, one for each category: Sweet, Savory, Dietary Restricted, and Youth.
Quite quickly the library became full of friends and neighbors, gathering at all corners of the library to catch up and chat, or to meet new people and unite in the love for pie, while enjoying complementary cider or coffee.
And though the building bubbled with laughter, when it came to judging and voting on the many available options the people of Nederland took their civic duty very seriously and pored over every decision and savored and studied each bite.
“Just like in politics this was a case of ‘your vote counts,’” Kendra Trauth told The Mountain-Ear. “The sweet division was tied between Elektra (Greer) and I and we had to use the secondary votes. That was nearly split too. I won by one vote.”
Trauth’s classic Coconut Cream Pie won over Greer’s silky Chocolate Pecan Pie in the Sweet category; Barbara Hardt won first place in the Savory Category with a delicious and festively colorful Taco Pie; and Ellie Najjar won first place in the Dietary Restricted category with a gluten free “Just Peachy” Pie.
In the Youth category, Ruby Gustafson won third place with a Chocolate Strawberry Pie, Ember Eich won second place with a Pumpkin Spice Pie, and Mena Stedem won first place with a smooth and delectable Honey Pie.
The event was a collaborative fundraiser for both the Nederland Community Library and Nederland Food Pantry.
