Ryan Farris has been playing music for over twenty years. He started playing cello in fifth-grade orchestra in Nederland and taught himself the fiddle a couple of years after that. His maternal grandmother (who was Irish) bought him his first instrument when he was young – an Irish penny whistle – and he fell in love with Irish music.
When Farris was young, he would play in groups formed by his neighbors and other locals before learning the cello in school and playing for the Boulder Youth Symphony. He would earn his undergraduate degree in music at CU Boulder before going to Seattle to get his master’s degree.
Farris plays Celtic music, mostly Irish and Scottish music, and also plays for the Boulder Irish Session, a group of amateur players that gets together every week to play. While in Seattle for his master’s degree in 2018, he joined a newly formed band called Cavort Celtic, which is now recording their second album.
Farris discusses how traditional Celtic music often plays in more intimate venues such as breweries or pubs. He loves being able to welcome the audience to every performance and be consistently engaged with them, something that was virtually impossible to do during quarantine. He is thrilled that venues are starting to open up again, and he is excited for every opportunity he gets in the full-time career in music that he adores.
