Music of the Mountains: Lost PennyFree Access

Erin Dahlby and Nadine met at a bluegrass jam in Estes Park in 2015. Nadine played Erin a song from the repertoire of Nickel Creek, “Reasons Why,” and started talking about bluegrass. Later, Erin’s three-piece bluegrass band happened to play at the same venue as Nadine, and Nadine invited Erin to stay and help her play on her set. They continued to sing together and realized how compatible they were as a duo; thus, Lost Penny was born.

While the group still focuses on performing as a duo, they have added a bass player, a fiddle player, and a banjo player to some of their shows to expand their sound. Nadine says that groups like The Civil Wars and Shovels and Rope helped bring the two together musically, and she also cites Jamestown Revival as a considerable influence.

Erin played the piano at a very young age, joined the choir when she was a child, and played the saxophone in a band. In sixth grade, she bought an electric guitar with her own money, using a Guns and Roses guitar book to help her learn how to play. When she was 20, she picked up an acoustic guitar for the first time, and around this time, she started learning more about the bluegrass genre and became more dedicated to learning how to perform.

Nadine first played the organ when she was four years old. Her brother, Mike, started teaching her how to sing acapella harmony, and they and her other brother, Dave, would often prank call people and sing acapella songs or barbershop pieces to them. In sixth grade, she started playing the violin for the orchestra, and would do so through high school. She received guitar lessons from award-winning bluegrass artist Kelly Lancaster, and once she moved to Estes Park, she started performing in a rock band. Eventually, she discovered that she loved writing songs, something that she has since brought as an advent into Lost Penny.

The duo loves the vibrations that they get while playing music, and they being able to share it with a live audience as well, and they hope that their audience has a good time when they come to see the two perform.

If you want to see Lost Penny performing live, be sure to check them out at Busey Brews, 70 E. 1st Street in Nederland, on Sunday, July 3, 2022, at 3 p.m.
