Derek Dames Ohl has always fantasized about playing music, even from as young as his elementary school years. He learned how to play the guitar and bass before leaving high school, although he primarily played the guitar. From there, he formed the band Flash Mountain Flood with other musicians, where he started improving his skills on the bass and became the primary bass player of the band.
He cites artists such as Van Morrison, John Prine, The Grateful Dead, and Brent Cobb as influences that have stuck around for most of his life. He loves being able to play around the Nederland and Boulder area and adds that the Caribou Room is a special venue to him for the acoustics.
One of Ohl’s favorite aspects of being able to perform live is traveling, as he always has “an itch” to travel somewhere new and allow him to make an income on the side. Throughout his career, Ohl has learned that a musician doesn’t need to be on the top of the Billboard charts or a household name in order to be able to support themselves financially, and to him, it matters more that he is able to perform the music that he loves while traveling to new places that makes it worth it to him.
He hopes that audiences will be able to get something out of the songs he writes and that they will be able to relate to his songs on a personal level. He loves when people come up to him and tell him that they connected with certain aspects of his songs, potentially even finding a hidden message that Ohl didn’t think of when writing the song. He wants to be able to let people connect with each other through his music, and he hopes that his shows will allow people to share the best sides of each other.
