Mary Kate McKenna worked for more than 13 years as an operations executive, customer support manager, and marketing manager – positions that clearly prepared her for her most recent role, that of a newcomer to the liquor store business. However, she is no newcomer to Gilpin County.
McKenna and her partner, Nile Conlon-Lewis, initially moved to Gilpin from New Jersey in 2009. They immediately fell in love with the mountains, the people, and the music in the community. After moving to the Boulder/Gunbarrel area to pursue their respective careers until 2015, they knew that when they started their homebuying search this was the community they wanted to be in.
McKenna has always been passionate about contributing to entrepreneurial environments. Prior to owning Mid County Liquors, she has worked in three start-ups: first at Pier Conference Group, a financial conferencing company in New Jersey; then at ZisBoombah, a kids educational technology company in Boulder; and for the past eight years, for Pangea Organics.
On October 1, 2021, McKenna took over Mid County Liquors, buying the business from longtime owners Jan Petersen and John Dunham, who started the business around 2005. Mid County Liquors offers a one-stop shop for people to purchase supplies for their gatherings and celebratory occasions. They offer a long list of beers and wines, spirits, mixers, and more.
But it’s not just about the alcohol, it’s about the hospitality. It’s about the interaction with others in the community. McKenna and her experienced retail manager, Ashly Miller, listen to their customers and they make sure to have their favorite beverages in stock. If they don’t have it, they will find it!
McKenna loves what she does. She is working to build a future for her family, neighbors, and business community. She appreciates the interactions she is able to have at the store with her neighbors and friends. Every day is a new opportunity to meet new people and, best of all, to connect. She says, “I have so much gratitude for the support I have received in Gilpin County and look forward to continuing to see the store’s customer base grow!” It has been an incredibly positive process with a lot of support from Ashley Martin and Sharon Cate, at the county level.
During a time when COVID has had an impact on all of our communities, McKenna is proud to join the Mid-Gilpin County business community, working together to promote growth and support neighbors in any way possible.
